HAMMAM TRADITION
Hammam (bathhouse) culture dates back to more than two millennia and particularly points at the almost- sacred role of water in humankind’s life. In addition to cleaning and purification, bathhouses were also a sourceof healing for people and they rose to prominence with the introduction of public baths during the Roman period. Also common in the Middle East, North Africa, Andalucía, Central Asia and India, bathhouses emerged in Anatolia after the Seljuks settled in the region.
Bathhouses, or more aptly hammams in Islamic culture, assumed an unprecedented role during the Ottoman period and in addition to their function as places of cleansing and purification, they had become significant public spaces where people from different walks of life could socialize. They were, after all, spaces where not only Muslims, but people from other religions and cultures mingled on an equal basis. The bazaar hammams, where different segments of the society could exist together, started to lose their importance after the introduction of running water to households.
HAMMAM RITUAL
The Ottoman hammam featured a regular sequence of rooms: the vestiary (cold room), the warm room, and the hot room. In addition to these, there was a hidden furnace that remained unseen by visitors. The cold room served as a welcoming space, preparing visitors for the serene ambiance of the hammam, complete with its impressive dome and spacious layout. This room also allowed bathers to relax, enjoy refreshments, and even partake in tobacco, a practice known as "hammam pleasure."
The Ottoman hammam played a pivotal role in celebrating significant milestones in people's lives. Beyond being a place for cleansing, purification, and healing, it was a hub for social events. Visitors engaged in activities like singing, reciting poetry, and conversing. It's worth noting that the hammam had a particularly transformative impact on women who were often marginalized in public life. The hammam hosted a variety of traditional rituals in Ottoman society.
These included the postnatal bath, held on the fortieth day after a baby's birth, where a ceremonial procession entered the hammam. Red sugar syrup was poured, and a prayer was recited for protection. Bridal baths were customary for girls before their weddings, while henna baths were observed in some parts of Anatolia. Additionally, there was the fifteenth-day bath for brides and their relatives, circumcision baths for boys about to undergo the procedure, groom's baths for the groom and his entourage before a wedding, and soldier's baths for prospective military recruits.

For The DIY, you are invited to experience an authentic and elevated hammam experience in the tranquility of your own company. The self-guided session begins with warm marble therapy. After your skin is softened and prepared, you can scrub your body from head to toe with the single-use kese. Traditionally known as göbektaşı, you are welcomed to relax under the majestic dome, cleanse yourself with a DIY foam massage using the traditional pure hammam soap, and wash your hair.

The Bridal bath is a centuries-old tradition appreciated and celebrated today. It’s a time-honored “self-care gathering,” where the bride-to-be has an authentic bathing experience with her close friends and family. Zeyrek Çinili Hamam is open from Tuesday through Sunday between 8.00–22.00. It is closed on Mondays. The last recommended time to book is 20.30.
FOR A SATISFACTORY EXPERIENCE
We recommend that you arrive 15 minutes before your reservation time in order to comfortably prepare for your hammam ritual. Our staff will accompany you from the moment you arrive at the hammam.
For a satisfying hammam experience, the approximate duration of the washing and resting periods is 90 minutes. We kindly ask you to make your reservation considering this time.

WE PROVIDE
We will provide you with all the materials you may need (such as peshtamal, slippers, towels, and shampoo) during your hammam experience. Disposable underwear is available in the hammam. However, we advise you to bring spare underwear and/or bikinis/bathing suits.
Guests can bring their own personal care products if they wish.
YOU CAN KEEP
You can safely keep your personal belongings in the lockers that will be allocated to you during your hammam experience.
CAREFUL
Hammam services are not recommended for guests with cardiovascular diseases, high-low blood pressure, respiratory diseases (asthma, bronchitis, COPD), diabetes, urinary tract infections, recent surgical operations or cancer treatment. Guests with severe skin problems such as skin burns, allergies, open wounds or epilepsy cannot benefit from our services.
It is not recommended for pregnant women to enter the hammam. It is not recommended to drink alcohol before the hammam experience, or to arrive on a completely full or empty stomach.
PLAY TIME
Children between 0–5 years old can enjoy the hammam free of charge with their parents.
Accompanied by their parents, children between the ages of 6–11 can benefit from the “Little Bubbles” treatment which introduces them to the traditional hammam ritual.
RECOMMENDATIONS & WARNINGS
Bringing food and beverages to the hammam is not allowed. For purposes of hygiene, food and beverages are not served in the warm and hot rooms of the hammam. Our guests can enjoy traditional selections from our menu offered in the resting area (cold room).
Photo and video shootings are permitted only in the cold room and should be done without disturbing and/or involving other guests in accordance with the general rules of public businesses.
If there is a delay of 15 minutes or more, reservations will be cancelled automatically. Rescheduling on the same day is evaluated according to the treatment and current availability. If there are no available slots, our team will assist you in booking for another date.
