JANUARY 20-FEBRUARY 24, 2023

Zeyrek Çinili Hamam will be hosting a new series of talks. Focusing on the book Barbarossa’s Çinili Hamam: A Masterpiece by Sinan, published concurrently with the opening of the hammam, the talks joined by the authors in the book will explore the various aspects of the hammam. Hosted by the book’s editors Aslı Özbay and Aykut Şengözer, the talks will take place between January 20–February 24, 2024 at the men’s cold room of Zeyrek Çinili Hamam.

Visitors who arrive 30 minutes before the talk will have the opportunity to take a short tour in the hammam. Offering experts’ historical, socio-cultural and architectural perspectives on Zeyrek Çinili Hamam, these talks will also be an opportunity to experience the hammam’s architecture before it opens for bathing in April 2024

The first session of the talks focusing on the book Barbarossa’s Çinili Hamam: A Master Piece by Sinan start with The Marmara Group’s Construction and Projects Director Yavuz Suyolcu and the architect of the restoration project Cengiz Kabaoğlu. Hosted by Aslı Özbay, one of the book’s editors, the talk will shed light on the 13- year restoration extensive process which also produced surprise finds.

ÇİNİLİ HAMAM: ITS ARCHITECTURE, TILES AND ORNAMENTATION

The second instalment of Zeyrek Çinili Hamam book talks features Prof. Filiz Yenişehirlioğlu, faculty member of Koç University Archaeology and Art History Department and director of VEKAM, with Prof. Baha Tanman, President of Sunan- İnan Kıraç Foundation Istanbul Research Institute’s Scientific Committee as speakers. Hosted by Aykut Şengözer, one of the editors of the book Barbarossa’s Çinili Hamam, the talk will focus on the architecture, splendid tiles and ormanetation of the hammam which were recovered after the restoration.

The fourth session of Zeyrek Çinili Hamam book talks brings together the team that worked on Barbarossa’s Çinili Hamam: A Master Piece by Sinan. Hosted by the book’s editors Aslı Özbay and Aykut Şengözer, the book’s designer Yeşim Demir Pröhl, photographers Orhan Cem Çetin and Murat Germen will talk about the making of the book from commissioning of the articles to the photography shootings and design process.

The guest of the fifth session of Zeyrek Çinili Hamam book talks is Tim Stanley, senior curator of Victoria and Albert Museum’s Middle East Art and Design Collection. Hosted by Aykut Şengözer, the talk will tell the interesting story of how Çinili Hamam’s tiles removed from the building found their way to V&A’s collection.

POETRY AND CALLIGRAPHY AT THE ÇİNİLİ HAMAM

Some of Zeyrek Çinili Hamam’s tiles are significant in respect of their calligraphic and literary qualities. The 18th-century hammamiye tiles on display at the Zeyrek Çinili Hamam Museum will be the subject of this episode hosted by Aykut Şengözer with art historian and Islamic arts expert Dr. Bora Keskiner as the guest.
